H.B. Croom papers, [1830] Oct. 29-Nov. 3.

Letter, 29 Oct. 1830 from Cheraw, S.C., to his wife in New Bern, N.C., informing her that his departure had been twice delayed by a lame horse and a broken axle. Letter, 3 Nov. [1830], Columbia, S.C., mentioning his improved health, comparing the "handsome town" of Columbia to the "neat little town" of Camden, "Columbia is a very handsome town, and contains many splendid buildings," reporting that he saw the recently erected DeKalb monument, commenting on the difficulties of travel and advising that her brother travel by ship, and noting the large amount of barren land in South Carolina, except in vicinity of the Pedee, Wateree, and Congaree Rivers, where "you see upon their banks the most elegant lands imaginable."
